Speaker: Anne Guerrant played tennis on the pro tour for 9 years, ranking as high as #11 in the world.  She played at Wimbledon, the US Open, and all the major tournaments.  Her record includes wins over Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King. In 2005 she and her husband, Terry, visited a micro credit lending program in India.  They were truly inspired by the dignity and ambition of the women entrepreneurs they met. They started the Guerrant Foundation to help women and families improve their lives through tiny loans to start businesses.

One half of the world’s population lives on $2/day.  70% of those 3 billion people in poverty are females. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace prize winner along with the Grameen Bank, began loaning small amounts of money to the poorest of the poor of Bangladesh in 1976.  With tiny loans these impoverished people were able to begin to generate an income and break the devastating cycle of poverty.  The Grameen Bank, which Dr. Yunus founded in 1983, has helped 6 million people in Bangladesh lift themselves out of poverty.   Today there are about 3,000 micro finance institutions around the world helping over 100 million people.   The Guerrant Foundation supports Opportunity International and the Grameen Foundation.  If you want to make a donation, please contact Anne or visit the website at http://guerrantfoundation.org or

Ø Next week is the TRS Board Meeting after regular meeting. Members are invited to attend as well. Remember, it counts as a make-up.

Patrick de Hahn passed around a list of schools and the poverty level of the students.

President Martie said that the Aramark Corp. contacted her concerning our interest in running a food stand at the Tempe Diablo Stadium. We would run a beer & hot dog stand. It was felt that if we could join with another Rotary Club, we could manage the time and ‘manpower’ commitment.

Clarissa & Charlene from the ASU Rotaract club announced that their Annual Silent Auction Fundraiser will benefit the Phoenix Rescue Center this year. It is scheduled for April 18th at the Old Main Ballroom on the ASU campus. Details will follow.

Please remember that next week's speaker is Anne Guerrant, the Guerrant Foundation, providing micro loans to poor individuals.  Anne is a former professional tennis star.  Bring your guests to hear this presentation and be inspired.

Speaker: GSE team traveled to Japan

and during that time, they were guests at 20-25 Rotary clubs. Though instructed to travel light, Michael noted that they also had to bring gifts, dress clothes, etc. making “light” a relative term. Being in Rotary in

Japan

is quite an honor and very intense. Social & cultural issues and projects were not “advertised”. In the Japanese culture, they do not believe in taking “credit” for altruistic behavior, and did not show Rotary projects. Michael also noted that at every Rotary meeting, there was a Welcoming party, and a Goodbye party. He stated that his favorite experience was being able to discuss political issues and history with the Japanese. Michael is a computer programmer, e-commerce. The cultural exchange was a positive experience for him, and we all appreciate his ability to be such a wonderful ambassador for Rotary and for America

Corey drew the winning ticket, but not “The Queen of Hearts”. Sorry, Corey.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 A.M.
