Announcements:

• The Gilligan’s Island Rotary Club: We will have one “theme meeting, a networking meeting for Tempe businesses to recruit new members and a “Luau”.

• Remember to sell the Diamondback’s baseball tickets, we have 100 to sell.

• Charter Night is Saturday at 6:00 pm at Clain Jumpers at Arizona Mills.

• Next week is Patrick’s first meeting as President.

Speaker: David Postal, St Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

• The amount of food available has increased by 76% in 2008-2009.

• Food is obtained from any source available. St Mary’s distributes 60 million pounds of food and works with many other organizations to deliver food. Many other food Pantries get food from St Mary’s.

• The food bank has several other organizations under its umbrella, and many volunteer hours go into running these programs.

• Less than 4 cents on every dollar is used for running the food bank.

• Christmas food boxes are distributed to 196 families (2 boxes/4 person family). The Food bank puts out 7 meals for $1.00. Arizona matches dollar for dollar donations to the food bank.

• Different Food banks have their own service areas, but TRS members can work with St. Mary’s Food bank or with “United”, the other food bank in its area..

Today’s drawing was won by Bobbi de Haan who drew the 10 of spades. Too Bad.

Speaker: Jim Wellington, Hospice of the Valley spoke on :Dispelling Myths about Hospice”. In Maricopa County there are 32 hospice organizations, all have one goal to comfort people at the end of life. “Hospice of the Valley” has over 2000 volunteers. Hospice of the Valley also has a dementia program a pediatric program and a chronic disease program. . While a patient is in hospice, their Doctor is not shut out and may take care of patient needs. If you are the family member of a cancer patient, be sure you have a good responsive oncologist. Medicare covers cost. Hospice goes to group living homes, and supportive living situations. If a patient is admitted to a hospital, they are no longer in hospice but may be readmitted when out of the hospital.

“Hospice of the Valley” Headquarters are on East Earll Drive. If the patient is at home, the 11^th hour service will send a Hospice member to be with the family while the patient passes away. Also, if 24-hour care is needed at home Hospice will find someone to be in the home. Many patients are in hospice care for many months, well beyond the old “6 month” rule that they must have 6 months or less to live.

Business Meeting
1.    St Lucia Matching Grant:
DG Don LeBarge met with Ben Eubank and reviewed the TRS paperwork and Gary Law’s paper work and found the documents in order. The District matching grant funds will proceed as usual.
2.    District 5510 conference 2009 “Go for the Gold” is May 14-17 2009 at the Little America Hotel in Flagstaff, AZ.  TRS may get the “most cooperative project award”  as the result of Patrick’s work pulling together Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs together .  This cooperative project may also be the featured project in London at the RI International Convention.
3.    Patrick deHaan noted the TRS website needs updating as old material is on our webpage.
4.    Patrick will get information for the club on the Lions and Kiwanis club golf opportunities that TRS may be able to participate with. Also information on the certified wildlife habitat that the three clubs, Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis may jointly participate.

Digital TV - Punishing the Poor

I was reading the FaceBook page of a friend who works with the homeless. I had not even thought about the repricussions of the digital transition and how it was going to effect the poor and the homeless. You may not have either. Please read the post below.

All remaining full-power television stations still broadcasting in analog will make the transition to all-digital between April 16 and June 12. As of February 17, 2009, about one-third of the nation's full-power TV stations had already gone all-digital.

Working with Low Income Folks, many just moving into housing often with nothing. A Tv is a luxury. Due to the switch many folks are left without any reception due to not having a converter box.

If anyone out there has cable and is able to order DTV coupons, donating them to a local shelter or housing program would be very much appreciated. You would not necessarily have to purchase the box, just order the coupon and donate it if you do not need it. Many of the clients I work with receive an income of 203 which covers rent, food...Ah, not much left....and now no tv.

Please help if you can.
